What to expect

The visit, step by step.

Not knowing what will happen is often the hardest part. Here is exactly how a Paws Into Grace visit unfolds, so nothing comes as a surprise.

  1. We arrive and settle in

Your veterinarian greets you and your pet wherever they're resting. You can fill out the consent form ahead of time, so there's less to think about that day.

  2. We talk it through

We explain each step and answer every question before anything begins. Nothing you ask is the wrong question.

  3. Deep rest, with you beside them

A sedative and pain medication help your pet relax into deep sedation over about 10 to 15 minutes. You can stay close, talking to them and holding them.

  4. The final step, on your terms

We tell you before the final medication is given. You can stay at their side or step into another room. Either choice is a loving one.

Most visits take 30 to 45 minutes. You won't be rushed, and you won't have to drive home afterward.

Why Paws Into Grace exists

Started by a vet who knows this kind of loss.

Dr. Elizabeth Benson lost her mother as a young girl, and later spent long nights in busy emergency veterinary hospitals, watching pets in their final moments surrounded by startling noises and unfamiliar smells. She came to believe those moments belonged somewhere else: on a well-worn couch, in a shady spot in the yard, maybe with a little peanut butter or ice cream, in the arms of their family.

She founded Paws Into Grace in 2007 to make that possible. Today every veterinarian on our team is chosen for gentle end-of-life care.

It's okay not to know.

Many families call Paws Into Grace before they're sure. Our Quality of Life Scale can help you read your pet's comfort at home, and our veterinarians also offer quality of life consultations when you'd like a second opinion. Or simply call (619) 977-6698 to talk it through.

How do I know it's time?

There is rarely one clear sign. Changes in appetite, mobility, or comfort are common reasons families reach out. Our Quality of Life Scale can help, and a Paws Into Grace veterinarian can assess your pet with you during a quality of life consultation.

Should our children be there?

They're welcome, along with anyone else who loves your pet. Many families find it helps children see that death is something we can talk about. Our family support page has guidance for preparing them.

Will we feel rushed?

No. You'll have the time and space you need. You decide who is in the room and when you're ready for each step.

What if my pet passes before the visit?

Call us at (619) 977-6698. If your pet passes at home, we can bring them to our cremation office, with local pickup starting at $75.

Afterward

Cared for by us, start to finish.

When the visit ends, you don't have to arrange anything else. If you choose cremation, your pet travels with us and stays in Paws Into Grace's care. We own and operate our own aquamation facilities, a gentler, water-based process, rather than sending pets to an outside crematory.

Individual cremation

Your pet's ashes are returned to you. Starts at $295, based on weight.

Communal cremation

Ashes are respectfully scattered at sea by our partner, Oceans of Love. Starts at $195, based on weight.

Paw prints, urns, and keepsakes are available if you'd like something to hold onto. See memorial keepsakes. And when you're ready, our grief support resources are here for you too.
